چکیده

New techniques to measure 2-D and 3-D visibility over urban spaces are presented in this paper. The concept of ‘isovist’, i.e. the visible space from a vantage point, could help in providing a quantifiable basis for Kevin Lynch's urban analysis, as outlined in his book The Image of the City. We also expand on the concept of 3-D isovists and develop a new technique to calculate them on Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), whereby the same input information can easily be processed in pixel coordinates and in voxel-space, i.e. a three-dimensional array of urban visibility measures. The investigation of what we have called ‘iso-visi-matrix’ seems to allow a very useful interpretation of visibility from a visual perception viewpoint. The approach presented here suggests helpful applications for urban design, in particular for predicting the visual impact of new buildings on the physical context and understanding how open spaces may be used by people depending on visibility features.

C-IMAGE: city cognitive mapping through geo-tagged photos

Traditional research categorizes people’s perceptions towards city into Kevin Lynch’s five elements: node, path, edge, district, and landmark. However, enabled by the proliferation of crowd sourced data this paper utilizes geo-tagged photos to detect, measure, and analyze people’s perceptions. This paper introduces a project called C-IMAGE, which analyzes the interactions between city and human...

Analysis of Visual Impacts in Compact City’s Form

Desired physical form of cities has been noticeable since the beginning of urbanization, from old patterns of early civilizations to the latest urbanism’s theories, which offered to build better cities. The opinions in recent decades have expressed that compact physical form of cities is a better form than sprawl form to achieve urban sustainability. The form of the city is the embodiment of it...

Stress Field Analysis of V-Notches with Tip Cracks in a Polymer Material Using Digital Image Correlation

In this study, displacement field around v-notches of a poly methyl metha crylate (PMMA) specimen with tip cracks will be analyzed using digital image correlation technique. First intensity factor in combination with in-plane rigid body translations and rotation components will be determined by linear least squares fitting of the displacement field data to the corresponding relations among stre...

The image of the algorithmic city: a research approach

Design for civic participation in the “smart” city requires examination of the algorithms by which computational processes organize and present geospatial information to inhabitants. How does awareness of these algorithms positively or negatively affect use? A renewed approach to one popular twentieth-century model for city design reveals potential paths for answering this question. The paper e...
